Abbott Fails To Save Doctors From Levy

The Health Minister appears to have lost a federal cabinet battle to abolish a levy on doctors for their malpractice insurance, throwing doubt over his ability to prevent mass resignations by public hospital specialists. After protracted talks, cabinet yesterday is believed to have knocked down Tony Abbott's proposal to make taxpayers meet the entire cost of a $480 million government guarantee to prevent the collapse of the doctor-controlled indemnity organisation United Medical Protection.
